Recovery from Loss

Stones in my pockets

The weight of grief can be crushing as we try to come to terms with the pain of loss. Remembering to put our feet on the ground is often as much as we can do some days and looking ahead to life without a loved one can be too scary to even contemplate. Bereavement is often foremost in our minds when we think about grief yet there are more than 40 different life events which may lead to deep and painful feelings of loss. Divorce, or the breakdown of a relationship, loss of trust, loss of health, even redundancy can cause a deep sense of loss and despair as we think about our unfulfilled hopes, dreams and expectations of the future.

As a society, we are particularly bad at dealing with grief. We are told that 'time heals', 'to be strong', or 'to keep busy' or even 'don't feel sad'. But it is normal to feel sad, disorientated, confused and even angry when we have suffered a significant loss or an unexpected change in our lives. Although sadness is normal and natural, pain does not need to be. It is possible to live more fully in the present when you have completed on what was painful about the past.

Recovery means that we can look back and once again recall our happy memories without that aching pain of loss in our hearts. Or, as one client so eloquently said, 'I feel that I am no longer a griever but someone with wonderful memories that fill my heart'.
